My 24news : 'Facebook rejected Google'
AN FRANCISCO: Google Inc tried to partner with Facebook but was rebuffed, denying the search giant to the social network's trove of personal information, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said.
Schmidt did not specify which deal in particular he was referring to, but noted that Google's search could be improved with access to Facebook's data about Web surfers' friends and acquaintances.
"We tried very hard to partner with Facebook," Schmidt said. "They were unwilling to do the deal," he added, noting that Facebook had traditionally partnered with Microsoft.
Schmidt, who was speaking at the D9 conference organized by the blog AllThingsD, also noted that Google had also recently renewed a partnership with Apple in which Google provides map technology featured in the iPhone.
A former Apple board member, Schmidt said their relationship had gotten "rough" as Google began to develop its Android smartphone operating system, although they remained good partners in certain businesses.
Schmidt, who ended his 10-year run as Google CEO in April and handed the reins to 38-year-old Google co-founder Larry Page, is among the more than a dozen tech industry executives slated to speak at the conference, taking place this week at an upscale resort in Southern California.
Among the other scheduled speakers are the chief executives of the Walt Disney Co, Hewlett-Packard, Twitter, Zynga, Groupon and Alibaba.

Rahul Khanna's launched new Social networking in india| Management student set launch his own social networking site
BANGALORE: Inspired by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, a 21 year old management student is on an ambitious mission to build his own social network. Rahul Khanna, a student from Mumbai, has teamed up with some of his college mates and is on his way to launch a new social networking website which will try to "fill in the gap left by existing networks."
Says Khanna, "To be honest I was inspired by Facebook. One day when we were accessing Facebook during the exam time and nothing fruitful came out..thats when I felt why don't we fill in the gap and try to take social networking to a new level."
The social networking site, socheers.com, was launched in beta mode (testing phase) about three months back. Khanna has registered a self funded company, Socheers Infotech Private Limited , along with seven others and is planning to officially launch the site in about two months from now.
The site already has more than 18,000 registered users, claims Khanna who heads marketing and strategy for the company. Khanna's site went through an incident which is strikingly similar to Facebook which managed to overwhelm the Harvard University server when it was first launched.
"After we went live, word spread fast. The shared server we rented in Australia could not cope with the incoming traffic and had to shut down all the sites hosted on the server. We are now moving to a dedicated server in Nasik," he said.
Khanna is a student of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) university. "We have not done any promotions so far. First, we want to concentrate on the user interface and features," he said.
Besides the regular social media features like the status update and sharing, the site has features like the "jukebox" which allows you discover music your friends like and regional language chat. It also lets you upload and share documents and post videos.
"Soon a new feature which has to do with women and fashion will also be added to the site. This will be a compelling reason to be on socheers.com," said Khanna.

New Technology | DoP launches Mobile Money Transfer
CHANDIGARH: The Department of Posts (DoP) launched the Mobile based Money Transfer Service by the Post Offices in the country for quicker transfer of money from one city to another.
Launching the service, Union Minister of State for Communications, Information Technology and Home Gurudas Kamat said the aim of launching this service was to help those who were unable to avail banking services. The service will be operated by DoP with technological support from BSNL.
He said to begin with the service has been launched between Punjab and Bihar Postal Circles for transfer of money up to Rs 50,000. The complete roll out throughout the country would be completed in eight weeks, he added.
The minister launched the service by remitting Rs 1,000/- to Help Age India at Patna.
Kamat said the person intending to use the service would have to go to the Post Office which will provide them a unique PIN code after the transfer of money.
The sender would have to send the PIN to the recipient through a text message who would be home delivered the money after verification of the PIN on his mobile. The recipient could also go to the Post Office and collect the money, he said.
Kamat said India Post is the largest service network for transfer of money and annually about nine Crore money orders are being sent on the postal network.
He said that to speed up the money transfer the DoP had introduced Electronic MO and Internet MO and that the mobile MO was the third such service.
Secretary Posts Radhika Doraiswamy said that the DoP also proposes to interconnect all the 1, 55,000 Post Offices in the country to subsequently introduce Core Postal Service.
She said the department would also introduce the PO Savings Bank for which the mandatory clearances were being sought.
Referring to the high cost of sending money through MO, she said, "We need to reduce the Commission charges. We should be able to do this soon".
The charges for Mobile Money Transfer will be the same as it is on the traditional money order - five per cent of the remitted amount, a departmental spokesman said.
Director of BSNL R K Aggarwal said that the BSNL-PO joint venture will help the rural customers in availing of money transfer services. This will also revolutionise the financial inclusion programme of the government, he said.
He said in 1947 the tele-density in the country was 0.47 per cent which increased to 4.7 per cent in 1997 in fifty years. But after that within 14 years the tele-density has now reached 70 per cent.
The total number of mobile connections is 850 million presently and 15 million new connections are being activated in the country every month, he said.
