UK unemployment total reaches 17-year high |UK News

UK unemployment rose by 114,000 between June and August to 2.57 million, a 17-year high, according to official figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the unemployment rate also increased to 8.1%.

The unemployment total for 16-24 year olds hit a record high of 991,000 in the quarter, a jobless rate of 21.3%.

The number of people out of work and claiming benefits rose 17,500 to 1.6 million in September.

Other figures showed a record cut in the number of part-time workers, down by 175,000, and there was also a record reduction of 74,000 in the number of over-65s in employment.

The Employment Secretary, Chris Grayling, said that what the UK was now seeing was "the impact of the international financial crisis".

He said although the UK was not in the euro, it was "not immune" to the problems currently being experienced in the eurozone and in countries such as Greece.

There have been criticisms of the government's deficit reduction programmes, with some analysts saying it was hampering economic growth.

The shadow work and pensions secretary, Liam Byrne, said the news marked "a day of judgment for the government".

"Today's figures are the clearest proof yet that the government's decision to cut too far and too fast is hurting and just not working. Unemployment is soaring, and more young people are out of work than ever before."

Mass nude photo shoot at Dead Sea -Israel

Photographer Spencer Tunick is staging one of his trademark mass studies of nude volunteers, with a thousand Israelis posing on a Dead Sea beach.

The shoot on Saturday is part of a bid to boost Israel's campaign to have the salt-saturated feature recognised as one of the world's seven natural wonders in a global online vote in November.

Experts warn that the Dead Sea could dry out by 2050 unless urgent steps are taken to halt its demise.

'In some places the work is a little bit more controversial, and then in other places the works are accepted as a litmus test for how free a country is, or how open a country is, and how full of rights a country is,' he told a press briefing.

'For me, a country that allows the nude in art, in public space is some place that's very progressive, very open, and very caring, and very dignified.'

True story behind this photo | kissing couple during last week's Vancouver riots

Video footage has emerged showing what really happened to the infamous 'kissing couple' during last week's Vancouver riots.
The couple, identified as Australian Scott Jones, 29, and Canadian-born Alexandra Thomas, became an instant Web hit after Getty photographer Rich Lam snapped a photo of them caught up in a moment of passion as tensions flared between hockey fans.
In the video clip, riot police can be seen hitting the couple with their shields. After the incident, Miss Thomas appears distressed and lies on the ground as she is comforted by her concerned boyfriend.

Speaking with NBC’s ‘Today’ show, bartender Mr Jones said: “I was just trying to calm her down. It was pretty scary for her, and it seemed like the best thing to do.”

“I would call myself a tourist. It was Game 7, Stanley Cup finals, so something was going to happen whether we won or lost — something big. I just wanted to bear witness to what was going on. I never felt in danger while we were down there until the riot police came along.”

Environmental engineering graduate Alex added: “It happened so fast. I never expected it to turn into that situation so quickly.”

Europe and Asia Property market emerges from recession | global property market recover from recession

Global property investors have piled back into the sector in 2011, plunging cash into the emerging markets of Asia, stoking worries of overheating, and have chased core assets in key U.S. and European cities, causing demand to outstrip supply.

Either side of the Atlantic, uncertainty over capital adequacy-minded banks' plans to sell troubled property assets -- such as RBS'  1.6 billion pounds ($2.6 billion) project Isobel -- continue to cast a pall over recovery prospects.

Global Real Estate and Infrastructure Summit industry leaders will discuss the chief stumbling blocks facing the commercial property sectors of Europe, United States and Asia, and how it affects their investment decisions.

Property investors are uneasy about the global funding gap, which consultancy DTZ said totaled about $202 billion, while a slew of insurers, pension funds and private equity houses have entered the debt market, replacing the hitherto dominant banks.
