Special Record of VVS Laxman | Indian cricketer VVS Laxman completed 8000 runs in Test Cricket

Bridgetown, Barbados: It was a very  special day indeed as VVS Laxman became only the 4th Indian to complete 8000 runs in Test cricket. He achieved the feat at an average of 47.05 in 122 Tests, including 16 centuries.

He took 201 innings to reach 8000 runs, which is the fourth fastest by an Indian, next only to Sachin Tendulkar (154), Rahul Dravid (158) and Sunil Gavaskar (166). The top Indian run-scorers are - Sachin Tendulkar (14692), Rahul Dravid (12220), Sunil Gavaskar (10122) and VVS Laxman (8000).

Among the international cricketers, Laxman is the 22nd batsman to complete 8000 runs or more in Tests.

2015 ICC World cup will have 14 cricket team | 2019 ICC World cup will have 10 cricket team

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement its executive board had approved a 14-team contest in Australia and New Zealand in 2015, with 10 places going to the Test-playing nations. The second-tier teams will have to pre-qualify for the remaining four places.
The ICC also announced the 2019 World Cup would be a scaled-down 10-team event, with the top eight places going to the top-ranked teams and two berths being awarded in a pre-qualifying tournament.
The about-face on the 2015 World Cup reverses the ICC's decision to limit the tournament to the sport's 10 full-member teams - which left countries such as Ireland, the Netherlands, Canada and Kenya on the sidelines.

Sports News Saina Nehwal | Saina Nehwal loses in final of Indonesian Super Series 2011

Saina Nehwal goes down fighting in Indonesia final
Defending champion Saina Nehwal lost 21-12 21-23 14-21 to China's Yihan Wang in the finals of Indonesia Open Super Series badminton tournament.

Saina Nehwal was aiming for a third successive Indonesian Open Super Series title after advancing to the finals with a hard-fought victory over Chinese Taipei's Shao Chieh Cheng.

The fourth-seeded Indian won 21-14 14-21 21-17 in a 45-minute battle against giant-killer Cheng, who had created quite a flutter by upstaging top seed Shixian Wang and seventh seed Xin Liu earlier in the tournament.

Saina, who has won four Super Series titles, has played Wang once in the Uber Cup finals last year and lost in three games.

Her only title this year has been the Swiss Open Grand Prix besides the runners up finish at Malaysia Super Series.

Changes in SA cricket team | Major changes for South Africa as Kirsten takes charge

ohannesburg, June 6 : Gary Kirsten will take charge of the South African cricket team in August, heading an almost completely new leadership group.
Kirsten's appointment as team director and head coach was announced by Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday.
He will have two new lieutenants in assistant coach Russell Domingo and bowling coach Allan Donald and a new one-day and Twenty20 captain in AB de Villiers.
Graeme Smith will remain captain of the Test team, the only post that remains with the previous incumbent.

De Villiers will be vice-captain of the Test team and Hashim Amla will be vice-captain of the limited overs sides.
Kirsten will officially start a two-year contract on August 1 after what he described as a necessary "cooling off period" after his three-year stint as coach of India, which culminated in World Cup glory in April.
Domingo will also start work on August 1 but former fast bowling great Donald will start work immediately and travel with the South Africa A team to Zimbabwe this month.
Kirsten, 43, who played in 101 Tests for South Africa, said being appointed to coach his native country was a "major honour" but set no specific goals.
But CSA chief executive Gerald Majola said one reason why there had been an exhaustive process to find the new coach was a lack of consistency in the South African team's results and its failure to land a major global event such as the World Cup.
South African cricket was "a very different environment" from that in India, said Kirsten.
"It is important to get back into understanding the South African cricket environment and I am looking forward to working with the captains and the players."
Kirsten said consultants would be used from time to time to assist the full-time coaches.
He said Paddy Upton, the mental conditioning coach who shared much of the credit with Kirsten for India's success, would work with the South African team, although not on a full-time basis.
The new appointments mean the end of long-time assistant coach Vincent Barnes' role with the team.
The appointment of De Villiers and Amla mean there will be no leadership role for Johan Botha, who captained the Twenty20 team after Smith gave up that role last year.
And senior player Jacques Kallis, who has frequently acted as vice-captain or stand-in captain, will be free to concentrate on his role with Kirsten describing him as "one of the greatest players of all time".
De Villiers said he was looking forward to the challenge of captaincy.
He admitted that South Africa's defeat by New Zealand at the quarter-final stage of the World Cup had been disappointing.
"We have that history of not performing well in big events. We went down when the pressure was on again. That is definitely something I'd like to work on."

IPL 4: Malinga most valuable, Valthaty best bargain

Lasith Malinga is the most valuable player (MVP) of IPL 4 so far, beating emerging star Paul Valthaty to second place by just a bit.

When it comes to value for money (VFM), however, the Malayali from Mumbai who's making waves for Kings XI Punjab is streets ahead of all competition.

Behind Malinga and Valthaty in the MVP list are Johan Botha, Robin Uthappa and Doug Bollinger. Sachin Tendulkar heads the second half of the top 10 with Virat Kohli, Kumar Sangakkara, Yusuf Pathan and Jesse Ryder rounding it off.

None of these names, apart of course from Valthaty, makes it anywhere close to the top 10 in the VFM list. That's not surprising given that most of them count their annual fees in millions of dollars while uncapped Indian players like the Kings XI opener have to make do with a maximum of $50,000.

The others on the VFM list are, therefore, predictably local players who have more than pulled their weight for their squads. At No. 2 is Rahul Sharma, followed by Ambati Rayudu, Iqbal Abdulla and Sunny Sohal, in that order. The second half of the top 10 consists of Siddharth Trivedi, Ashok Menaria, Amit Singh, M S Bisla and A G Murtaza.

How have we arrived at these names? A fair bit of number crunching went into it, involving assigning points for batting, bowling, fielding and captaincy on the basis of objective parameters, not subjective opinion, to construct an MVP index.

Here's what we did. Batting points were calculated on the principle that both the quantity of runs scored and how fast they are scored should count. So we took the average strike rate of 130 that has actually been achieved by all batsmen and used that as a base.

The total runs scored by each batsman was multiplied by his actual strike rate and divided by this par figure. Thus, a batsman who has scored, say, 300 runs in the tournament so far would get batting points equal to 300 if he has scored at a strike rate of 130, fewer points if he has accumulated them slower and more if he has got them at a better clip.

For bowlers, we used the principle that both economy and wicket taking should count. Again the average economy rate of 7.5 runs per over for the tournament so far was used as the benchmark. Bowlers with a better economy rate than this were regarded as having saved runs for their team. For instance, if a bowler has been going at 6 runs per over and has bowled 20 overs, he would actually have conceded 120 runs. At the average rate he would have conceded 150. So he is given 30 points for saving those many runs. In addition, every wicket gets him 25 points.

Fielding points are given for catches, run outs and stumpings. Catches count for 10 points, run outs for 15. In the case of wicket-keepers, however, catches and stumpings fetch 25 points each, since they are in the side mainly for their fielding.

Finally, captains are given points for the performance of their teams, 25 points for each win and minus 25 for each loss. Adding all of these points together gives us the total points accumulated by each player.

Since it would be unfair to compare someone who has played, say, five matches with another who has played nine, we then divided the total points by the number of matches played by each player to get the points per match. This was the basis for the MVP rankings.

As for the VFM rankings, that was simply a matter of dividing the points per match score by the fees payable to each player per match to get a figure for the number of points per $100,000 of fees.

To ensure that a couple of outstanding performances don't unduly skew the results, we took only those who had played at least five matches. That meant, for instance, that Chris Gayle, who would otherwise have been by far the leader in the MVP stakes, had to be dropped. But that's only fair.

What is interesting is that the MVP list has at its top some like Malinga and Bollinger who are purely bowlers, some like Sachin and Virat Kohli who are wholly or entirely batsmen and many all-rounders. The VFM list also has a similar structure. This is a departure from the past when the same index tended to yield predominantly all-rounders at the top.

It is also a change from the first three seasons that there are no foreign players at the top of the VFM list. But that is due to the fact that the likes of Shane Watson, Shaun Marsh and David Warner, who came for a pittance initially are today commanding huge fees.

Sourav Ganguly to join Pune Warriors India

New Delhi, (PTI): After going unsold in the players' auction, former India captain Sourav Ganguly made a dramatic return to the Indian Premier League by signing up for struggling franchise Pune Warriors as replacement for injured pacer Ashish Nehra.

"We were waiting for Ashish Nehra's fitness report and ultimately the report came yesterday. I was already in talks with Ganguly and we decided that the amount of experience that Sourav has in cricket will no doubt help the team. So we finalised Ganguly last night," Pune Warriors Team director Abhijit Sarkar said referring to the finger injury that Nehra has been nursing.

Ganguly, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders for three IPL seasons captaining them in two editions, went unsold in the January players' auction despite a rather modest base price of $400,000.

The 38-year-old refused a mentor's role with KKR after that and there had been speculation of a possible comeback through another franchise. The left-handed batman was first sought by Kochi Tuskers Kerala but their application was rejected by the IPL's Governing Council.

However, he signed on the dotted line for Pune on Monday, giving a major fillip to the side which has lost six matches on the trot after starting promisingly with a couple of back-to-back wins.
